ケベック在住 主婦ブロガー Harupaka です。 今回は、 私の疑問だった、 記入する の英語での 言い方について です。 Fill と 何かからなる phrasal verb だということはイメージにあるんですが、Fill in? Fill out? or Fill up?この３つで悩みました。今回も、英英辞書 Cambridge Dictionar や Oxford Learner’s Dictionariesを基に違いを見ていきましょう。
まず、基本から。Phrasal Verbの違いに注目する前に動詞「to fill」の使い方をおさらいしましょう。
to fill : to put sth in an empty space （空いているところに何かを入れる）
「Fill up」
１．to make something full, or to become full
完全に行けるところまで埋めること
- Too many spam emails are filling up our inboxes.
- 大量のスパムメールのせいで、私の受信ボックスが埋まってる。
- 【Food】 There’s plenty of food. Fill yourself up!
- たくさん食べ物があるよ。たくさん食べてね！
- Do you want more cake? I can’t! I’m full up. = no more space
- もっとケーキ食べる？ 無理！もうお腹いっぱい。 ＝ 胃のスペースがない
２．to fill the fuel tank of a car
ガソリンを入れること
- We need to fill up.
- 車にガソリンを入れなきゃ。
「Fill in 」
1. to make sth full
何かをいっぱいにすること
- The council filled in a hole in the road.
- その地方自治体は、道にあった穴を埋めた。
2．to do somebody’s job for a short time while they are not there (REPLACE)
fill in (for somebody)
誰かの代わりに短期間仕事を埋めること
- She will fill in for him while he’s at the conference.
- 彼が会議の間、彼女が彼の仕事を引き継ぎます。
- I’m not her regular secretary – I’m just filling in.
- 私は彼女の秘書ではありません。（彼女の代わりに）仕事を埋めているだけです。
- The gym teacher was sick today, so a substitute filled in for her.
- ジムの先生が今日は体調不良でお休みです。なので彼女の代わりに、他の先生がきます。
- I asked Agnes to fill in for me while I went for lunch.
- 私がランチに行っている間、アグネスに私の仕事を代わりにやっておいてくれるようお願いしました。
3．to tell someone something they do not know, especially something that happened when they were not there
足りない知識を埋めること
- I haven’t seen the latest report, so perhaps you could fill me in?
- 最新のレポートを読んでいないので、ちょっと助けて（教えて）くれますか？
最新のレポートに載っている情報が私に不足しているので、他のすでにレポートを読んだ人に助けを求めています。
- 【fill sb in on sth】Josh filled me in on what had been agreed at the meeting.
- 会議で承認されたことについてジョシュが私を助けてくれた。
私はその会議に参加していなかったのでどんな内容が承認されたか知りません。そこで会議に参加していたジョシュが私に会議で決まったことを教えてくれ、私に足りない情報を埋めてくれたというニュアンスになります。
- 【fill sb in on sth】Elena! You’re back. Let me fill you in on what you missed.
- エレナ！戻ってきたね。あなたが逃したことを教えるよ。
4．to write or type information on a document in spaces that are provided for it
質問など用意されたスペースに情報を書き込むこと
- Companies will encourage customers to fill in questionnaires about themselves.
- 企業は、お客様にお客様自身のことについてアンケートに答えるよう推奨する。
- Please print off a copy of the agreement, fill it in, sign it and send it back.
- 契約書を印刷して、必要事項を記入して、署名して、返信してください。
「Fill out」
１．to become larger, rounder or fatter
人が大きくなること
- When John is older and fills out some, he’ll be an outstanding athlete.
- ジョンはもうちょっと歳を取って、体が大きくなったら素晴らしいアスリートになるよ。
- Wow, John! You’ve really filled out.
- わぁジョン！体格よくなったね。がっちりしたね。
2. to write or type information on a document in spaces that are provided for it
質問など用意されたスペースに情報を書き込むこと
- The 9m taxpayers obliged to fill out self-assessment forms must file their returns by September 30.
- 900万人の納税者は9月30日までに納税額自己査定の申告書を必ず完成させなければいけません。
self-assessment: 【財政】納税者が納税義務額を評価できる制度
oblige to do: to force sb to do sth, by law because it is a duty. （～する義務がある）
何かに登録するとき
- Please fill out this form to join.
- 登録のために、この用紙に必要事項を記入してください。
「Fill in」と「Fill out」は書類などに記入するという場合はどちらも同じです。言い換え表現として使いことができます。ただし「Fill up」は記入するという意味では使えませんので、これだけは抑えておきましょう。
