ケベック在住 主婦ブロガー Harupaka です。 今回は、 先ほど 英語で 文章を 書いていて、 私が 疑問に思った この over ・ beyond の違いを 説明します。
over ・beyond も、英和の辞書には、「を越えて」と表記があり、どっちをどういうときに使うんだろうと迷ってしまいがちではないでしょうか。どういった場合に使い分けるのかを、単語が持つ性質に注目して、 Cambridge Dictionar や Oxford Learner’s Dictionariesを基に英英辞書を読み解いていく練習も兼ねて、日本語話者の方に分かるよう、噛み砕いていきます。英語学習をはじめて、それなりのレベルに達したら、やはり英和・和英辞書を手放して英英に変えないと、それ以降の伸びが難しくなります。なので、今後少しずつ辞書を変えて、単語を正しく使いこなせるようにしていきましょう。

「over」
【prep.】＝【前置詞】
１．resting on the surface of somebody/something and partly or completely covering them/it
人・物の表面の一部または全部を覆うイメージ
- She put a blanket over the sleeping child.
- 彼女は寝ている子供にブランケットを掛けた。
- He wore an overcoat over his suit.
- 彼はスーツの上にコートを羽織った。
- She put her hand over her mouth to stop herself from screaming.
- 彼女は叫ばないように口を手で覆った。
２．in or to a position higher than but not touching somebody/something; above somebody/something
接触はなく、その誰か・何かの上に位置する
- They held a large umbrella over her.
- 彼らは、彼女に大きな傘を差した。＝彼女の上に大きな傘が広がっている
- There was a lamp hanging over the table.
- テーブルの上に電気がぶら下がっている。＝テーブルとの接触はないものの上
３．from one side of something to the other side of it; across something
ある側からもうひとつの側へ繋がる
- a bridge over the River Thames
- テムズ川に架かる橋 ＝ 橋は常に両サイドをつないでいる為
- The road over the mountains is steep and dangerous.
- その山のこちら側からあちら側に架かる道は傾斜が急で危ない。
- Their house has a magnificent view over the bay.
- （彼らの家から）海が見渡せる素敵な景色が見える。＝オーシャンビュー
ある窓から見た景色の右側から左側にかけてオーシャンビューのイメージ。建物と建物の間からかすかに見える時は使えない。
４．on the far or opposite side of something
ここの・対象物である何かの反対側
- He lives over the river in Richmond.
- 彼はリッチモンドの川の反対側に住んでいる。
話者の今の位置から見た彼の家の説明。話者の現在地・川・彼の家の順で位置している。
- There’s a bus stop just over the road.
- バス停が道の反対側にある。
このjustは、近くにある、またはすぐそこに見えるなど、バス停の位置を強調している。
５．so as to cross something and be on the other side
何かに上ったりして反対側に行く
- She climbed over the wall since she lost her key and couldn’t go inside.
- 彼女は鍵をなくし中に入れなかったため壁を登って中に入った。
壁を越えて、今と反対側に行くイメージ
６．falling from or down from the edge of something
何かの端から落ちること
- The car had toppled over the cliff.
- 車が崖から落ちた。
７．all over: in or on all or most parts of something
all overの形で：何かの一部または全部の中もしくはその上
- Snow is falling all over the country.
- 雪が国中に降っている。
- There were papers lying around all over the place.
- そこら中に紙が散乱している。
８．more than a particular time, amount, cost, etc.
ある時間・量・費用などより多いこと
- He’s over sixty.
- 彼は６０歳以上だ。
- She stayed in the United States for over a month.
- 彼女は約１ヶ月間強（以上）アメリカに滞在した。
- over 3 million copies sold
- ３００万部以上売れた
このcopyは、CDや本などの部数、枚数。
９．used to show that somebody has control or authority
over + 権力が有効な範囲
- She has only the director over her.
- 彼女の上には取締役のみいる。＝おそらく彼女は部長かナンバー２
- She has editorial control over what is included.
- 彼女は、記事にどんな内容が含まれているかを指揮管理している。
１０．during something
何かをしている間
- We’ll discuss it over lunch.
- ランチを食べながら話し合いましょう。
- He built up the business over a period of ten years.
- 彼は１０年以上かけてそのビジネスを作り上げた。
- She has not changed much over the years.
- 彼女は何十年もの間、ほとんど変わらない。
１１．no longer affected by a particularly difficult stage or situation
病気や困難な状況、存在を乗り越えた
- It took her ages to get over her illness.
- 病気を克服するのに、彼女は何年も要した。
- We’re over the worst of the recession.
- 史上最悪な景気後退は終わった。

- もう彼に未練はない。吹っ切れた！

ネガティブな出来事のきっかけ

特にラジオや電話を使う時
- We heard it over the radio.
- ラジオ越しに聞いた
- She wouldn’t tell me over the phone.
- 彼女は電話越しでは教えてくれないだろう。
１４．louder than something
二つの音の強弱関係
- I couldn’t hear what he said over the noise of the traffic.
- 彼が言ったことが渋滞の騒音で聞こえなかった。
音の大きさ：彼が言ったこと＜渋滞の騒音
- ’What?’ he yelled over the noise of the traffic.
- 「は？」彼は渋滞の騒音より（大きな音・声で）怒鳴った。
音の大きさ：彼が怒鳴った「は？」＞渋滞の騒音

１．on or to the further side of something
何かのさらに向こう
- Beyond the door was a narrow corridor that led off to the right.
- ドアの向こうに、右側に行ける・続く狭い廊下があった。
私と廊下の間にドアがある状況です。「further: さらに遠く」と聞くと、すごく遠いイメージをしてしまうかもしれませんが、私・ドア・廊下の距離が合計１メートルでも、何でもいいのです。
- He could see the horse in the field, just beyond the hedge.
- 生垣越しにしか、彼は馬を見れなかった。
私と馬の間に生垣がある状況です。
- The road continues beyond the village up into the hills.
- その道は、その村を越えて（さらに奥の）丘に続いている。
今話者がいる地点はその村に入る道の手前という状況です。まだ村には入れていないようなイメージです。現地点・村・丘の並びです。
２．later than a particular time
ある時間より後の時間
- I know what I’ll be doing for the next three weeks but I haven’t thought beyond that.
- ３週間先までは何をするか決まってるけど、それ以降は考えてない。＝４週間目以降は未定
- What changes await us in the coming year and beyond?
- 来年や近い将来に、何が我々を待っているのだろう？
来年と並んでいるので、自然な日本語にするために、近い将来としました。
３．more or greater than a particular amount, level, or limit
ある量・度合・限度よりも大きいこと；範囲の外
- Our success was far beyond what we thought possible.
- 思った以上の成功ぶりだった。＝予想した成功の範囲をはるかに超えた
- Her stupidity is beyond belief sometimes.
- 彼女はたまに信じられないことを言う。＝普通に考えられる範囲を超えた事。
beyond belief は日常でもよく使うイディオムなので一緒に覚えちゃいましょう。
- More people are choosing to work beyond retirement age.
- 多くの人が定年という枠を超えて、働くことを選んでいる。
４．used to say that something is impossible to do
可能な枠を超えて不可能を表す
- The smartphone was beyond repair.
- 損傷が激しすぎて、スマホは直せなかった。
直せる枠を超えてしまっているので、直せない。 beyond repair この言い回しも覚えちゃいましょう。
- The situation is beyond our control.
- この状況はもはや我々では手に負えない。
手に負える枠を超えてしまっているので、手に負えない。
- Her commitment to her profession is beyond doubt.
- 彼女の仕事への姿勢はすばらしい。
直訳は自然な日本語ではなくなるため、避けました。まず、 doubt の説明から。「疑う」だけで覚えてしまっていると、「suspect」との違いが付かなくなってしまうので、避けたほうがいいかと思います。 doubt は、「ではないのではと疑う」基本、ネガティブなので、「ない」のではと考えれば区別がつきやすいです。この文節では、commitmentやprofessionという単語から、仕事での場面であると考えられます。「ちゃんと仕事していないのではと疑う」枠を超えている＝仕事ぶりがすばらしい、言うことなしという解釈になります。
５．too far or too advanced for somebody/something
誰かの現在の能力と比べて、遠すぎる・難しすぎること
- The exercise was beyond the abilities of most of the class.
- その練習は、クラスのほとんどの生徒の能力以上だった。＝難しすぎた
- Expensive luxuries that are beyond the reach of ordinary people
- 一般人には手が届かない高級品＝高すぎて買うのが難しい
【adv.】＝【副詞】
１．on the other side; further on
反対側；将来
- The immediate future is clear, but it’s hard to tell what lies beyond.
- 近い将来は何するか決まってるけど、その先にどんな未来が広がってるかは分からない。
時間的な話なのでfurther onです。on が付くことで、継続している時間を表します。
- the year 2020 and beyond
- ２０２０年とその先
これも、 時間的な話なのでfurther onです。
